Doha, Qatar: Qatar Museums, in collaboration with the Norman Foster Institute, has announced an open call for applications to the Sustainable Cities Master’s Programme in Spain’s capital Madrid. As part of this initiative, Qatar Museums will offer four scholarships to Qatari citizens and Qatar-based residents, supporting the next generation of leaders in sustainable urban development.
Qatar Museums has worked with the Norman Foster Institute to designate Lusail City as a pilot city within the program. Lusail will serve both as a case study of Qatar’s pioneering achievements in sustainable urbanism and as a platform to imagine its future evolution. The research will generate valuable insights that can inform ongoing development and position Lusail as a global reference point for sustainable city-making.
Launched in 2024, the Norman Foster Institute on Sustainable Cities bridges academia and practice, offering. Its flagship Master’s Program on Sustainable Cities integrates research and practice across disciplines such as City Science, Urban Design, and Architecture, training future leaders to shape the cities of tomorrow.
The Sustainable Cities Master’s Program welcomes applicants from diverse academic and professional backgrounds - including architecture, planning, economics, science, engineering, sociology, and anthropology, amongst others - who are committed to advancing holistic approaches to the design and management of cities. The program is open to graduate and postgraduate students, as well as professionals of all ages, nationalities, and genders, provided they meet the eligibility requirements.
Applicants to the one-year program, which will run from January to December 2026, must submit the following to be considered: full name and current role/affiliation, contact information (E-mail and Phone Number), a scanned copy of passport and valid Qatar ID (jpeg /pdf), scanned copy of Bachelor’s Diploma (jpeg /pdf), Bachelor’s Degree is a necessary requirement but they can also share Master’s Diploma if applicable.
Also, a copy of the CV / Resumé (pdf) with the CV clearly indicating the starting and ending period of education, work and research experiences; a portfolio if available (max 10mb pdf)
A design portfolio is not mandatory for applicants who do not have an academic background in Design. However, samples of previous projects, research and publications related to the programme focus are very much welcomed.
Aside from these, applicants must submit a 100-150 word bio outlining area of expertise (such as architecture, planning, mobility, housing, climate, data) and interest in the programme (1 A4 page, .pdf). The bio must explain why they are a good fit for the programme, and summarise relevant skills, experience, knowledge and personal behaviours they have that fit the programme focus.
