Umm Salal Municipality cultivated over 451,000 flower plants in the public parks across the municipality during first half of this year under an ongoing campaign of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) to increase greenery and beauty of the country. 

The flower plants were cultivated at parks of Ali bin Jassim, Mohamad bin Jassim, Nasser Al Atiya, Al Kharitiyat Family Park and Al Kharitiyat Plaza Park. 

As much as 1,304 saplings of Sidr and Washingtonia trees were also planted at a service road parallel to Al Shamal Road, Al Sani’ Petrol Station, entrances of Umm Al Amad and Umm Salal Ali during the period of study from January to June, 2020. 

The Public Parks Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment is making great efforts to increase green areas across the country in a bid to protect the environment and combating desertification, in cooperation with the authorities concerned working in this field.  

The Department in cooperation with the Department of Protection and Wildlife implemented Qatari Ghaf Tree Protection Project and providing the necessary seedlings for the two projects. The Department distributed seedlings of local tree to government agencies, farms and citizens, in addition to planting various trees in cooperation with the municipal parks sections of the municipalities.  

The Department of Protection and Wildlife at MME is running a campaign to protect the endangered species of wild trees. Under the campaign the Department launched second phase of the project to protect a local endangered tree, mesquites (prosopis) which is locally called ‘Ghaf’, at a protected area, Rawdat Al Ghafat Makeen in Al Shamal. 

The project helped increase the number of the endangered tree from 50 to 400 during past three years.  The Department in cooperation with the Department of Agricultural Research, Al Shamal Municipality and Public Parks worked intensified efforts to put an end to the appellation of Al Ghaf and other endangered trees.  A natural increase in the number of the endangered Ghaf trees was observed in the Rawda after its closure, as after about three years of protection it reached over 400 trees. 

The Agricultural Research Department at the MME also making great contribution in the green drive of the country. The Botanical Research Section of the Department succeeded in cultivating and flowering six types of wild pastoral and medicinal plants in the field gene bank at the Rawdat Al Faras Research Center, during the 2020 planting season.
