Chennai: AIADMK cadres were yesterday seething with anger against the DMK, as they are convinced it is the latter that is responsible for the current travails of their leader J. Jayalalithaa.
Assembling outside the party headquarters here, emotionally charged AIADMK women in a choked voice praised their leader and listed the various welfare measures initiated by her that benefited the weaker sections of the state populace.
“Amma must be there to rule the state. What will happen to the poor now,” a woman party worker shouted.
AIADMK General Secretary and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Saturday was sentenced to four-year jail term and Rs1bn fine in the disproportionate assets case by a court in Bangalore.
The cadres of the ruling party blamed the DMK for foisting a false case on their leader which has resulted in her conviction.
Huge number of AIADMK workers gathered outside the party office as the legislators were set to elect their new leader in the assembly.
Party activist commits suicide
Chennai: Distressed after Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was jailed for corruption, a 45-year-old AIADMK member allegedly committed suicide in Tamil Nadu yesterday, police said. Babu hanged himself from a tree close to his house near the temple town of Kanchipuram.
According to police, Babu was upset after a court in Bangalore Saturday sentenced Jayalalithaa to four years in prison for amassing wealth illegally when she was the chief minister in 1991-96.
“Babu may have taken his life because of that,” a police officer said.
Meanwhile, A 17-year-old girl school student was battling for life yesterday after setting herself on fire over the jailing of Jayalalithaa, police said.
M Nagalakshmi, was admitted to the government hospital in Madurai town with around 80 percent burn injuries, a police officer said. She attempted suicide at her house when her family members were away.
