DOHA: The Qatar National Food Security Programme (QNFSP) has submitted the country’s first comprehensive “National Food Security Plan” before the higher authorities for approval.
The National Plan envisages to boost Qatar’s domestic production of agriculture from the current estimated 8 percent of the country’s total demand to 40-60 percent in short term to mid-term.
A team of more than 20 experts, including top international names, worked together for more than three years before finalising the report.
The National Plan contains recommends the need for Qatar making a paradigm shift from Qatar’s current farming practices, with the active support of private sector.
QNFSP sources told The Peninsula the National Plan was submitted to the “Higher Authorities” in July 2013.
“The presentation was very well received by the government... we are now working with stakeholders in both public and private sectors to design and put in place the “next steps” required for the implementation”.
