DOHA: Qatar Airways (QA) Cargo is continuing relief efforts, operating 12 freighter services to deliver urgent aid to capital Kathmandu following the recent devastating earthquakes that hit Nepal.
QA Cargo’s freighter operations coordinated Qatar’s humanitarian response and helped transport international aid to Nepal.
The cargo carrier’s first freighter left Doha for Kathmandu within 24 hours of the earthquake and was the first commercial airline to touchdown at Tribhuvan International Airport following the first earthquake.
Akbar Al Baker, Chief Executive, QA Group, said: “QA was able to respond rapidly to support the people of Nepal, providing freighter aircraft to transport aid, including medicines, food, water filters, generators, tents and volunteers.
“Additional QA ground staff were deployed on the first aircraft to assist in airport operations and distribution of humanitarian aid and ensure QA staff in Kathmandu received support and care.”
Some 400 tonnes of aid provided by charities, including RAF, have been flown to Nepal.
QA Cargo worked in conjunction with local and international charities to provide free transportation of food and water filters to support Nepal’s recovery and provide aid for areas that have no clean water as a result of the disaster.
The aid was distributed by local charity groups throughout the capital. QA staff also assisted the airport’s Air Traffic Control tower team to manage traffic flows into the airport and ensure operations were maintained throughout the crisis.
