DOHA: Sheikh Thani Bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) has dispatched fresh urgent aid of basic foodstuff at a cost of QR2.7m to internally displaced families in Iraq.

The initiative aims to distribute food baskets to some 11,500 families comprising 60,000 people in the governorates of Kirkuk, Irbil, Sulaymaniyah and Baghdad.
The project was financed through donations made by philanthropists in Qatar to ease the suffering of thousands of people in Iraq due to ongoing conflict.
It was launched by the RAF office in Iraq in coordination with the UK- based organisation, AAN, in February. Aid distribution continues and is expected to be completed by end of this month. A survey was conducted for the targeted areas with the help of AAN to select the most deserving beneficiaries.
The initiative aims to distribute food items at least for a month to 11,500 families of an average five members each. The food basket contains 12 items, including rice, lintel, sugar, edible oil, and pasta.
Fresh aid is being provided in response of the humanitarian crisis due to a growing number of displaced people in the governorates of Ninawa, Salahuddin, Kirkuk and Diyala.
Fatal diseases have spread among children due to malnutrition and severe shortage of foodstuff and healthcare facilities. Aid provided by Iraqi government and humanitarian organizations is not enough to cover the need of these areas.
Figures provided by local authority show 700,000 families comprising 3.5 million people are listed as internally displaced persons (IDPs). They were displaced from Al Anbar, Ninawa, Salahuddin and Diyala governorates.
