Dr. Rana Hassan, from Mass Communication Department of Qatar University, said that an important panel discussion on 'Media Ethics and Gender' was held on the second day of the 3rd International Conference on Media and Communication yesterday.
Dr. Rana Hassan, who was also Head of the Conference Organising Team, said that the panel discussion was very successful as it discussed various aspects of the topic with renowned panellists like Solamz Sharifi, Cultural Attache at the US Embassy, Doha.
“The panellists discussed many issues related to the gender representation. My topic was on ‘Clicktivism’ and 2.0 Support: How Egyptian Women Follow Social Media Ethics for Social Causes and Advocacy’,” said Dr. Rana.
“I discussed how social media forced us to work behind computes and keyboards and how it is important to do so. Let us think the social media as step number one but major steps should be taken in real life activism.”
“I gave two examples in my paper of two Facebook groups. One is called ‘catch-molester’ which was very successful in 2010. The group allowed only members who worked as real life activists to tackle social issues,” said Dr. Rana.
She said the second group allowed everyone to participate by posting photos and messages and talk about objectionable things which were totally against the ethics and morality.  “We discussed that how media trend became like robot without any feelings, ethics and manners and how we should fight against this practice,” said Dr. Rana.
