The work of the second day of the Global Judicial Integrity Network meeting, held in Doha in its second edition, witnessed the launch of a pioneering initiative to allocate an International Judicial Day for Women to be celebrated worldwide under the umbrella of the United Nations.
The initiative was presented during a public discussion session held within the work of the network meeting, in the presence of Chairman of Supreme Judiciary Council and President of the Court of Cassation H E Dr. Hassan bin Lahdan Al Hassan Al Mohannadi, and a number of heads of courts, judges, stakeholders, and representatives of institutions and judicial bodies around the world.
During his intervention at the session, His Excellency affirmed that the State of Qatar supports the “International Judicial Women Day” initiative, noting that the Supreme Judiciary Council will coordinate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to support the initiative in the United Nations General Assembly.
He said that the issue of enhancing the presence of women in the judicial field and empowering them should have greater efforts at all levels in order to achieve a greater balance that opens the door widely for women in the judiciary.
H E Chairman of Supreme Judiciary Council expressed his pride in the experience of the State of Qatar in the field of empowering women judges, revealing that the Supreme Judiciary is currently working to raise the proportion of women in the judiciary to 30 percent by 2030 in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.
For her part, President of International Association of Women Judges Vanessa Ruiz, valued the support of HE Dr. Hassan bin Lahdan Al Hassan Al Mohannadi for the initiative to launch an International Day for Women Judges, appreciating also the support received by women judges in the Supreme Judicial Council in order to enhance their presence and status in this field.
Ruiz who announced the launch of the International Judicial Women Day initiative, indicated that this initiative aims to strengthen the presence of women judges, which would also strengthen the judiciary in general.
On the other hand, Judge Fatima Abdullah Al-Mal from the Supreme Judicial Council spoke about the experience of Qatari women in the judicial field, highlighting her personal experience as a judge and the support she received to enable her to play her role to the fullest.
She pointed out that women in the State of Qatar enjoyed important position as she held many leadership positions in several fields, which confirms the confidence that she enjoys and support by the wise leadership of the state in general, and Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser in particular.
Al Mal confirmed that the Qatari experience in the field of female judges has proven successful over the years, as the first female judge was appointed in the State of Qatar in 2010 and then more appointments took place, bringing the number of female judges to 7, along with the judges assistance.
