After attending the summit, the Amir returned to Doha yesterday evening. Earlier at the summit, the Saudi Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence underlined that the “Middle East Green Initiative Summit” seeks to coordinate efforts to protect the environment, confront climate change, and develop a roadmap towards reducing carbon emissions in the region by more than 10% of global contribution, and plant 50 billion trees in the region, through the largest tree-planting programme globally, which will contribute to achieving 5% of the global target for afforestation.

“Today, in the first edition of this summit, we aim to work together to develop a regional roadmap and a framework to enable the achievement of these ambitious targets.

“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia believes that traditional energy sources were the primary reason for the transformation underwent by the regional and global countries from traditional agricultural economies to globally active economies and the catalyst towards the fastest economic growth ever known to mankind,” the Saudi Crown Prince said in his speech at the summit opening.

The summit is seeing a wide international participation, led by heads and leaders of countries and decision-makers of the world. The initiative is designed to draw a regional map to preserve and raise the quality of life and make a global difference in preserving the nature, humans and animals, and face the challenges of climate change.

Saudi Arabia said Middle Eastern economies will be boosted by efforts to cut planet-warming greenhouse gases, Bloomberg reported.

“Climate change is an economic opportunity for individuals and the private sector,” Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said. Reducing emissions will “create jobs and strengthen creativity in the region.” The kingdom will establish a fund to improve carbon-capture technology and back an initiative to develop clean fuels and provide food for hundreds of millions of people, H R H Prince Mohammed said. The two initiatives will cost 39 billion riyals ($10.4bn) and Saudi Arabia will contribute 15%.
