Mustapha Adib, speaking at a press conference at the presidential palace in Baabda
Beirut: Lebanon's Prime Minister-designate Mustapha Adib resigned on Saturday amid a political impasse over the formation of the next cabinet.
Adib announced he was stepping down from "the task of forming the government" in a televised speech after meeting Lebanese President General Michel Aoun at Baabda Palace, after his efforts ran into trouble, particularly over who would run the finance ministry, Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA) reported.
Adib named to the top job at the end of August after the last government stepped down in the wake of the Beirut port blast on August 4 that killed 190 people, injured thousands more and damaged many parts of the coastal capital.
He had tried to form a Cabinet made up of independent specialists that could work on enacting reforms. However, his efforts have hit multiple snags, particularly after the countrys main Shiite groups, Hizbullah and Amal, insisted on retaining hold of the key Finance Ministry.
