Islamabad: Pakistan government has declared a national emergency as rain-induced floods have so far killed 937 people including 343 children, and left at least 30 million without shelter.

The Pakistani government, in a 3-hour meeting this morning, called on the army to assist the Civil Administration in relief and rescue operations after millions were displaced and thousands of homes were damaged by the floods.

The office of Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said in a statement that the floods affected more than 30 million people across the country, most of them were displaced after their homes were damaged by heavy rains and floods.

During the meeting, Sharif decided to send soldiers from the Pakistan Army to assist the Civil Administration in relief and rescue operations. The statement mentioned that the Prime Minister also called for an emergency conference to be held in Islamabad to request the help of the international community.

Pakistan is suffering from the consequences of the heavy monsoon rains that caused massive floods last July and killed more than 800 people.

The province of Sindh in the southeast of the country, as well as the province of Balochistan in the southwest, were the most affected by the floods.
