DOHA: The University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ) has launched a new Master of Nursing Leadership programme.
Created in partnership with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), the programme is the direct result of collaboration with Qatar’s community of nurses.
“The programme has been developed in response to the request of Qatari nurses looking to equip themselves with the knowledge and training to be successful in leadership positions,” said Dr Kim Critchley, Dean and CEO, UCQ.
“The programme is focused on developing leadership skills within the nursing profession in Qatar. We are proud to be able to deliver it and we thank the state for support.” The programme will prepare skilled nursing professionals to drive the quality and good management of Qatar’s growing health services. It will contribute directly to Qatar’s human development, as all eight students in its first intake are Qataris. It is designed to further develop a national workforce capable of delivering high-quality services and research.
Maytha Al Bouainain, Executive Director, Community Affairs and Patients Engagement, Hamad General Hospital, is a student of the programme. “As a Qatari, it is important for me to uplift and advance the professional standard of nursing in Qatar and around the world. There are huge opportunities to develop the nursing profession through collaboration and education — that is what I aim to achieve by participating in the programme. It will enhance skills of nursing professionals and ultimately patient care and health services as a whole, which will benefit Qatar’s population.”
The launch coincided with the completion of studies for UCQ’s first Mster of Nursing class. Earning advanced nursing degrees in oncology and thesis-based research.
