Sixteen people were killed after a boat carrying illegal immigrants sank off the coast of the Greek island of Paros in the Aegean Sea.

Today, Athens News Agency (ANA) reported that coast guard teams managed to retrieve bodies of the victims, to rescue others and to transport them to the island of Paros. Coast guards also sent planes and ships to the area, explaining that the boat was carrying more than 80 migrants.

On Friday, Greek authorities announced that 11 bodies had been recovered from the sinking site of another boat carrying migrants off an uninhabited island in southern Greece on Thursday.

Tens of thousands of migrants are constantly seeking to cross the Mediterranean from North Africa to reach Europe. Crossings they take are often perilous and journeys become more complicated in winter due to bad weather.
