New York: The GCC has reaffirmed commitment to the spirit and purposes of the United Nations Charter on the occasion of the UN’s 70th anniversary.
Abdurrahman Yaqoub Al Hammadi, Qatar’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, delivered a statement on behalf of the GCC before the 70th session of the UN General Assembly meeting to mark the occasion.
He said the signing of the charter represents the launch of a historic stage that changed the course of history. The founding of the UN was a turning point in international relations and the beginning of a historic stage to find a balanced international environment to achieve peace and prosperity for the peoples and promote human dignity.
He said the UN has succeeded in saving the lives of millions of people, however, main and crucial issues remain without solution, in particular the Palestinian cause.
He said the sufferance of the Palestinian people, violations in Jerusalem, attacks on Al Aqsa Mosque and worshipers, provocation of feelings of more than one billion Muslims and flagrant aggression on the Islamic nation represent a violation of the international law and resolutions of international legitimacy.
He highlighted the Syrian crisis which threatens regional and international peace and security, and regretted the international community’s failure to assume responsibilities as identified by the charter.
On the UN’s 70th  anniversary, we must review its accomplishments and failures and obstacles it faces in coping with international developments, he said, reiterating the GCC commitment to the charter to achieve goals and prosperity for all.
