Officials and students attending the opening of the 10th academic year at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMUQ) yesterday.
DOHA: Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMUQ) marked its 10th year by welcoming 118 new students for the 2013-2014 academic year, up from an inaugural class of 41 students in 2004 to 400 from 42 countries this year.
CMUQ’s continued commitment to the growth of Qatar and the region is evident as this year Qatari nationals make up more than 50 percent of students entering the biological sciences and information systems programmes.
“We are extremely pleased to see an increase in the number of Qatari students joining us, as we pride ourselves on our alignment with the country’s national research agenda and our ability to add real value to an extremely important focus on Qatar,” said the Dean, Ilker Baybars.
“The campus opened in Qatar in 2004 with 41 students in two programmes. Today we have 400 students in five exceptional programmes; a great way to mark our 10th anniversary in Qatar.”
The university, which opened its doors this year to 110 freshmen and eight transfer students, offers five undergraduate programmes in biological sciences, business administration, computational biology, computer science and information systems.
The figures show consistent growth, with 32 students majoring in biological sciences, 187 in business administration, 84 in computer science and 97 in information systems. In addition to CMUQ’s full-time enrolment, 40 students from other Education City institutions are cross-registered to take classes at CMUQ.
