Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago is calling on the Senate to investigate the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) for recently approving  tuition increase of private colleges and universities in the country.

Santiago will file a resolution today calling on the Senate to conduct an inquiry into the matter which affects some 300 private schools.

CHED is facing public criticism over its decision to increase tuition and other school fees for 313 colleges and universities. It has approved an average increase of P29.86 per unit or 6.17 percent for tuition, and P135.60 or 6.55 percent for other school fees.

As co-author of the Unified Student Financial Assistance System for Tertiary Education (Unifast) Bill, the senator emphasized the necessity for Congress to consider drafting a law to ensure that funds collected from increased school fees are not merely for profit.
