One dead, 16 rescued after boat capsizes in UAE

Doha: 16 people were rescued after a boat capsized on a beach in the Eastern Region of  Sharjah on Friday, April 21, 2023. The Sharjah Police General Command, in cooperation with the Coast Guard Group "First Squadron", led the rescue mission and has confirmed that one person has died as a result of the accident. 

Director of the Eastern Region Police Department, Colonel Dr. Ali Al-Kay Al-Hamoudi, stated that a report was received at the Operations Room regarding the incident, at 3:40pm on Friday, stating that a boat has overturned. 

According to Col. Al Hamoudi, all specialized teams, including rescue teams, ambulance and police patrols were immediately dispatched to the accident site, in coordination with the leadership of the Coast Guard Group "First Squadron". 

A total of 16 passengers had been rescued, while four individuals, including a kid, were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. Authorities also stated that one 38 year-old Asian national died from the accident.

According to preliminary investigations conducted by the police, there were violations and irregularities detected which led to the capsizing of the boat.  The perpetrators were then referred to the authorities. 

Furthermore, Col. Al Hamoudi called on all boat companies to comply with security and safety procedures, as well as to drive with caution, and not to exceed the permitted number of passengers. He also reminded that life jackets must be worn at all times to ensure the safety of the tourists or passengers on board.
