DOHA: College of the North Atlantic-Qatar’s (CNA-Q) new Refinery Simulator Software may be 3D virtual reality, but not a game. It is quite seriously changing the face of Oil and Gas training in the Middle East.

The advanced technology of the Virtual Refinery Simulator Training is first of its kind in the GCC and provides a distinct enhancement in job site safety, productivity and teamwork. This gives CNA-Q’s graduates a distinct advantage when training to enter the oil and gas work force.

“Along with our state-of-the-art scale version of a modern processing plant, this 3D virtual reality software model gives our students methodology in all aspects of a modern refinery, both for control panel and field operator training. Operations can be carried out in real time, allowing students to quickly and correctly solve operating problems,” said Jim Bathgate, Associate Dean of Industrial Trades at CNA-Q.

CNA-Q has several process control simulators working in tandem with the Oil and Gas Training Centre – also the first of its kind in this region.

The facility is dedicated primarily to the Technician Preparatory Program (TPP), designed to educate and train employees at the Technical Vocation Education and Training (TVET) technician level. The simulator training for outside operators, console operators, and supervisors are essential to providing realistic training for the full operations team in a refinery. Emphasis is placed on developing practical skills and competencies, problem solving skills, technical communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team to deliver training at the highest possible level.

The college also uses the Student Performance Analysis package – a comprehensive set of analysis and trading tools to evaluate student performance.
