DOHA: Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) yesterday announced to have successfully commissioned its multi-million dollar ‘Al Thumama Super 220/132kV Substation 1’ project.
The newly-built substation serves the new residential facilities at Al Thumama area by transferring bulk power from Ras Abu Fontas B and Messaieed Power Generation Plants.
The substation connects to Doha South Super as well, which is the interconnection point of the GCC grid. The 220kV and 132 kV over-head lines (OHLs) linked to Al Thumama have been replaced with extra high voltage cables that are buried underground. That includes seven OHLs linked to Ras Abu Fontas A, Ras Abu Fontas B, Al Wukair Super and Al Wakra substations, comprising a total length of 54km.
The project was completed before the target deadline, as over-head lines replacement with cables was essential to complete the basic infrastructure projects of Public Works Authority (Ashghal) and Qatar Rail aimed at year 2022 in the area.
The main challenge of the project was to dismantle those over-head lines that were installed over years and link the connected network substations in a tight deadline to ensure continual power supply to all customers, with no interruptions.
Kahramaa has been able to successfully manage to overcome this challenge. The project comprises 13 contracts at a total value of QR788m (about $216.4m).
This includes 220 kV cable installations for a total length of 183 km and 132 kV at a total length of 58km, as well as dismantling 54km of over-head lines. Combined Work hours exceeded 748,147 man-hours, with no lost time due to injury (LTI).
