Dhaka: The extradition treaty between India and Bangladesh became effective yesterday as the two neighbours exchanged the instruments of ratification of the treaty which allows them to extradite convicts or undertrial criminals.
Bangladesh’s Senior Home Secretary C Q K Mostak Ahmed and Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pankaj Saran signed and exchanged the documents, the Daily Star newspaper reported.
“With the signature of the ratification instruments and the exchange, we are now in a position to bring the treaty into effect,” the report quoted Saran as saying.
Bangladesh Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir and his Indian counterpart Sushilkumar Shinde signed the agreements during a home ministerial meeting in Dhaka on January 28.
EADS to fund India aerospace research
New Delhi: The European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS) will fund Indian universities and institutes for research projects in aerospace, the global aerospace major said yesterday.
“The research projects will be in areas of avionics, composite materials, high-performance computing, nanotechnology and applied mathematics,” EADS’ Indian subsidiary said in a statement here from New Delhi.
The Netherlands-based company will initiate the projects in partnership with the Indo-French Centre for Promotion of Advanced Research under the ‘EADS-CEFIPRA Aerospace Programme’.
Police getting tough on ‘rowdy bikers’
New Delhi: The city government yesterday told the Delhi High Court that a comprehensive drive against “rowdy bikers” has been initiated at India Gate and nearby areas to check violation of traffic rules and illegal activities like stunt-biking.
Advocate Zubeda Begum, appearing for Delhi Police, told the division bench of Chief Justice N V Ramana and Justice Manmohan that strict action as per law is being taken whenever any such bike stunt incident is found. The bench took note of the affidavit filed by Deputy Commissioner of Police G S Awana, which said that police have made all possible efforts to stop bikers from engaging in stunts on the roads.
War brings misery, says Omar Abdullah
Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah yesterday said that wars have never solved any issue and only bring destruction and misery. “No one in Jammu and Kashmir or in the country is in favour of war, as wars are no solution to any issue”, Omar Abdullah said while addressing a public rally in Tangdhar, a town bordering Pakistan in Kupwara district of the state.
