Transport Minister discusses bilateral relations with Gambian counterpart, IALA Secretary-General

Doha, Qatar: Minister of Transport H E Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti met with Minister of Transport, Works, and Infrastructure of the Republic of the Gambia H E Ebrima Sillah, in the Ministry’s offices yesterday.

The two ministers discussed Qatari-Gambian relations in the areas of transportation, harbours, and civil aviation, and ways to further enhance them.

Separately, the Minister of Transport met with the Secretary-General of the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) Francis Zachariae, in the Ministry’s offices yesterday.

The two officials discussed Qatar-IALA cooperation relations in the areas of marine systems, and ways to further enhance them in such a way that supports the global efforts of protecting lives and property, and navigation and marine environment safety.

Several MoT officials and IALA Deputy Secretary-General Omar Frits Eriksson were in attendance.  

IALA is a non-profit, international technical association. Established in 1957, it gathers Marine Aids to Navigation authorities, manufacturers, consultants, and scientific and training institutes from all parts of the world and offers them the opportunity to exchange and compare their experiences and achievements.

IALA encourages its members to work together in a common effort to harmonize Marine Aids to Navigation worldwide and to ensure that the movements of vessels are safe, expeditious and cost-effective while protecting the environment.

Since its establishment, IALA has developed several important concepts and systems, such as: The IALA Maritime Buoyage System (IALA MBS), Differential GPS System (DGPS), Automatic Identification System (AIS), VHF Data Exchange System (VDES), and Development of Vessel Traffic Services (VTS).
