QGBC studies hotels’ environmental quality

DOHA: Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC) hosted an event titled ‘Towards sustainable hotels in Qatar’.
It highlighted results of a comprehensive ‘Indoor Environmental Quality Case Study for Hotels’ conducted by QGBC’s Healthy Building Interest Group in collaboration with Movenpick Hotel West Bay and other partners. The survey focused on measuring aspects of indoor environmental quality, including acoustics, accessibility, furniture, materials, housekeeping and indoor air quality. 
Engineer Meshal Al Shamari, Director, QGBC, said: “The event marks another milestone for QGBC in its journey towards raising awareness and creating a culture of sustainability in the built environment in Qatar. The outcome of Healthy Buildings Interest Group’s collaboration with Movenpick Hotel is a valuable addition to sustainability literature and research in Qatar.” 
Ghada Sadek, General Manager, of the hotel, said the QGBC study provided an opportunity to find innovative ways to address sustainability issues in the hospitality sector. “Movenpick is taking a leadership role in creating a culture of sustainability in the hospitality sector. We are open to work with partners to ensure these issues are dealt with in the future.” Results of the study will be made available by QGBC for research in the near future.
Iñigo Satrústegui, Head, Healthy Buildings Interest Group, QGBC, and Managing Director, Quality Air Global in Qatar, said the study is a ground-breaking piece of research, which will prove useful for indoor air quality and sustainability experts in Qatar.  “In the near future, we will use it as a benchmark to help other hotels, companies and institutions improve indoor environmental quality for their buildings. QGBC welcomes collaborations to help improve standards of indoor environmental quality within the built environment through research and case studies.”
