A technical glitch triggered by a power fluctuation caused two North-bound Light Rail Transit -1 trains to collide after leaving the Monumento station, limiting the Baclaran to Monumento operation for six hours yesterday.
The LRT line 1 resumed full operations at about 1:29 p.m. after the trains were towed to its depot in Pasay City.
LRTA spokesperson Atty. Hernando Cabrera said a power fluctuation hit LRT 1 at about 7 a.m. yesterday prompting the signaling system to activate red signals, which halted train movement along the rail line.
At that time, Cabrera said, a Roosevelt-bound train stopped along the sharp curve between Monumento and Balintawak stations and another north-bound train was suspended inside the Monumento station.
Yet despite the red signal, the north-bound train left the Monumento station and hit the tail end of the train that was stuck halfway between Monumento and Balintawak stations.
As a result, the windshields of the train cars that collided were damaged and its dashboards misaligned. The train operator of the renegade train was also hurt.
