Kahrama president addressing the virtual event
The National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed) run by Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has helped save QR300m during 2020.
“Tarsheed programme in 2020 reduced electricity consumption of 289 Gigawatt hours (GWh), water consumption of 32 million cubic metres (m3) and natural gas consumption of 3,207 million cubic feet (MCF), representing a financial saving of QR300m,” said Kahramaa President Eng. Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari.
He said that the programme also cut carbon footprint caused by the operation of electricity and water sector about 0.4 million tonnes last year. Al Kuwari was speaking at a virtual event organised by Kahramaa yesterday to demonstrate the achievements of Tarsheed during 2020 on its 9th anniversary.
“The programme, which was launched in 2012 under the patronage of Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, is the main pillar to intensify efforts for environment protection to address the climate issue faced by our ecosystem,” said Al Kuwari.
He said that the achievements of the national programme Tarsheed extended to the legislative and technical field, and it undertook a number of important initiatives during 2020
“The initiatives include implementation of energy efficiency regulations in various sectors, and the initiative for energy efficiency standards for air conditioners, which is among the wide-impact initiatives, since its application in 2019 and until now, the energy efficiency standards saved about QR61m,” said Al Kurwari.
He said that the efforts continue in this context, as an initiative was recently announced to reduce consumption in the residential sector by 5 percent. “This initiative is expected to achieve financial savings of QR212m, and significant results in the consumption pattern of the residential sector,” said Al Kuwari.
Director of Tarsheed and Energy Efficiency at Kahramaa Abdulaziz Ahmed Al Hammadi said that Tarsheed provided technical initiative and awareness and implemented several innovative projects like electric car charging stations.
He said that Tarsheed in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport and Communications had launched first electric passenger bus and charging station for it. The winners of Tarsheed competitions which targeted all segments of the society have been announced during the virtual event yesterday.
Khalifa Stadium Energy Center, Aspire Zone Foundation won Best District Cooling System Performance contest.
Best Renewable Energy Research Project contest went to Texas A&M University in Qatar. Al Bayan High School for Girls won the Best School Project on Sustainable and Energy Efficiency contest. Peter Hernandez won the Best Recycled Art Competition. Tarsheed partners during 2020 have been honoured for their cooperation.
