Turkey’s Rio Olympics silver medallist Daniyar Ismayilov yesterday made a clean sweep in the men’s 73 weight class as the 6th Qatar International Cup continued in Doha.
On the second day of the Olympic Qualifying event which is being held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ismayilov lifted a total of 344kg (156+188) to win the overall gold in his group.
Germany’s Richard Max Lang won the overall silver medal with a total of 330kg (150+180).
Lang’s attempts in snatch was the second best in their group, but his 180kg lift in the clean and jerk was ranked fourth behind the bronze winner Albanian Briken Calja (180kg) and Uzbekistan’s Doston Yokubov (181kg) who was placed fifth in the final standings depending on the total weight lifted.
Calja registered a total weight of 327kg (147+180).
Meanwhile, North Korea’s Sim Choe Hyo won the women’s 64kg gold by lifting a total of 229kg. She lifted 99kg in her third attempt in the snatch, a kilogram less than Italy’s Giorgia Bordignon who marked 100kg. In the clean and jerk round, Choe lifted 130kg to top the table.
Bordignon won the silver after registering 121kg in her only successful attempt in the clean and jerk round to make it a total of 221kg.
India’s Rakhi Halder won the overall brounze after lifting a total of 2018kg (95+123). Uzbekistan’s Kamushkon Fayzullaeva who cleared the 96kg mark in the snatch round, was also awarded a bronze medal.
Local favourite, Qatar’s weightlifting star Fares Ibrahim Hassouna will be in action today, looking to defend his crown in the 96kg class which he won in the previous edition of the championship.
The silver winner at the 2019 World Championships in his weight category, Hassouna will be looking to rewrite record books in the same manner he did a year ago.
The two-time Junior World Champion and a silver medallist at the 2018 Asian Games, the 21-year-old lifted a record total of 397kg to win gold during the previous edition of the event last year.
Fares will begin his quest for backto-back titles in the home event at 3:00pm today.
The tournament is a qualification event for the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and is hosted by the Qatar Weightlifting Federation (QWF) under the auspices of the International Weightlifting Federation.
