Paris: Former French president Jacques Chirac who has been undergoing a medical check-up will leave hospital this week and spend Christmas with his family in Paris, his daughter Claude Chirac told AFP on Monday.

"After having gone through all necessary medical checks, Jacques Chirac will return home this week and spend the Christmas holidays with family," she said.

Chirac, 83, was taken to hospital in Paris for a check-up on December 9 after complaining he had felt "weak for a few days," his daughter had said at the time, adding that there was no "cause for concern".

On Monday another relative said that the ex-French leader has been impatient to leave hospital for several days, adding with a smile: "He's in a bad mood, which is a good sign!"

Chirac, who was head of state from 1995 to 2007, is now rarely seen in public and has reportedly suffered from memory loss and is confined to a wheelchair.

He had a stroke in 2005 during his second term as president.

In December 2013, he underwent successful kidney surgery, and two months later he was briefly hospitalised for treatment of gout.
