One of Doha’s strongest musical outfits has re-branded itself and adopted a new name. Doha Bach Choir has turned into Qatar Concert Choir.
Conductor Giovanni Pasini, who is also Principal Viola of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, said: “We’re ambitious about where we want to perform, our range of music and the audiences we want to reach. Having the image of only performing Bach or sacred music had started to limit our scope and the way people thought about us. We’re a choir, we’re in Qatar and we give concerts of all kinds – so our new name says exactly what’s in the tin.”
And Qatar Concert Choir has some really big dates coming up, including their first performance with Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra in ‘Broadway Melodies’ at the Festival of Music at QNCC on December 9, singing songs from Les Miserables, A Chorus Line, The Phantom Of The Opera and Mamma Mia.
“We’re thrilled to be singing with QPO”, says Pasini. “It sets the bar higher for us – and this show gives us the chance to sing great music by modern composers that’s loved by millions around the world.”
They’ll also be teaming up with Doha Baroque Ensemble for ‘Music For The Tempest’.
But before either of these, they’re bringing Handel back to Doha in the ‘Baroque In Qatar’ concert series - with two performances of the great seasonal choral work Messiah. These are at Doha English Speaking School on November 29, and the Anglican Centre November 30 at 7.30pm.
