Mohammed bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Attiya’s Bahgdad (Frankel x Funny Girl) won the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot yesterday. The four-year-old bay colt battled bravely to win the class 2,2400m-race in a thrilling finish.

Ridden by Ryan Moore, the Mark Johnston-saddled Baghdad pulled out all the stops to hold off Frankie Dettori and the HRH Princess Haya of Jordan-owned and John Gosden trained-Ben Vrackie who came second with a short head behind the winner.

Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum’s Fujaira Prince completed the frame with further 1.5 lengths behind.

He was saddled by Roger Varian and ridden by Andrea Atzeni.

This victory is a back-to-back Royal Ascot’s win for Baghdad, who won the King George V Stakes at the same meeting last year. He was injured after that race and had a nine-month break. Yet, he has returned even stronger this year! At the age of four, this is Baghdad fifth win in only 10 starts.
