DOHA: The Qatar Company for Meat and Livestock Trading (Mawashi) has ruled out any possibility of horsemeat being mixed in meat sold in the country.
Qatar is free of horse meat because it is not importing any kind of meat from Europe and strict regulations are followed in meat import, said a Mawashi official.
The official was reacting to concerns raised by several residents about the quality of canned meat sold in Qatar following a recent scandal in Europe after horsemeat was sold as beef in several packaged foods.
“Mawashi is not importing meat from Europe. Strict regulations have been set by the authorities concerned regarding meat import,” the official told Al Sharq.
Some GCC countries including Saudi Arabia has imposed strict rules on meat imported from Europe after horsemeat was found in products labelled as beef in many European countries since beginning of this month.
Laboratory tests recently confirmed that beef lasagne produced by food manufacturer Findus UK contained horsemeat.
Few days ago Nestle, one of the big food companies, has removed beef pasta meals from sale in Italy and Spain after finding traces of horse meat.
