Qatar construction projects valued at $250bn

DOHA: Qatar’s ongoing construction projects are valued at more than $250bn, with infrastructure attracting 34 percent of the total investments. In addition, $100bn are planned to be spent on development projects in anticipation for the FIFA World Cup in 2022, which is likely to translate into higher demand for properties and construction materials between 2012 and 2016.

This was revealed in a two-day conference featuring in-depth discussions on various aspects of construction with an aim to revolve around the role of concrete in hosting the World Cup; the use of concrete in nuclear structures; the importance of concrete in Qatar Vision 2030 opened here yesterday, a press release said yesterday.

Organised by Advanced Construction and Technology Services (ACTS), a consulting organisation in the field of construction materials and geotechnical engineering, the third international Future Concrete conference will conclude today at Ritz Carlton Hotel. The event has been eagerly awaited by the region’s concrete and construction industry, given the recent positive industry developments across key regional markets.

Undersecretary and Chairman of Qatar Standards, Ministry of Environment, Dr Mohamed Seif Al Kuwari, gave a keynote speech where he talked about Sustainability in Qatar and Green Building, and its importance in Qatar Vision 2030.

The conference also aims to shed light on the latest advancements in cement and admixture technologies.

The opening day also featured presentations by: Dr Gyِrgy L Balzs, President of the International Federation of Structural Concrete (fib) and Professor at Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Hungary; Eng. Khaled Awad, Chairman of Advanced Construction Technology Services (ACTS) and others.

Today’s agenda includes talks by David Ball, Director of the Concrete Society and chairman of David Ball Group, UK; Nick Ecart, Senior Director at ASTM, USA; Philip Owens, Technical Director at Nestone, UK; Ahmad Sabra, Branch Manager of ACTS, KSA; Farro Radjy, Chairman of Quadrel, USA.
