Doha: The Qatari chess team continued fined run at the Abu Dhabi International Festival, claiming seven victories yesterday.

In the open chess category, Qatar’s Abdullah Al Hamid managed to raise his score to three points after beating Tajik counterpart Sharifi Mansour, Indian player Ramesh Nair Advit and Czech Marial.

Saad Al Sulaiti also earned a victory, beating Syrian opponent Janbaz Zaher, while his team-mate Ryan Irfan defeated Gu Xiaoyuan of China as third round concluded.

Qatar’s Khalid Al Jumaat excelled in the Under-16 event, registering two wins.

Meanwhile, Qatar’s Ibrahim Al Janahi drew against Leo Leonard (USA) and Hamid Al Hassani (UAE) before losing to Bahrain’s Obaid Abdulrahman.

Secretary General of the Qatar Chess Federation Yousef Mohammed Al Mutawa stressed the importance of participating in such events.

“Our goal is to achieve good results in these competitions, and to reach an advanced position in the overall standings by collecting as many points as possible," he said.

"Qatar players are capable of getting good results in the regional and continental championships,” he added.
