DOHA: Qatar’s Sheikh Ali Al Thani and Ashraf Amjad Al Saifi earned respectable finishes at the Olympics Games after making their marks in showjumping and hammer throw finals respectively on Friday in Rio de Janerio.
Ali Al Thani, bracketed among the top riders in the world, secured sixth position after a flawess final round, riding First Devision. Britain’s Nick Skelton riding Big Star, Swede Peder Fredricson (All In) and Canada’s Eric Lamaze (Fine Lady 5) respectively clinched podium finishes in the contest.
Meanwhile, Al Saifi also claimed similar sixh spot in the hammer throw final after achieving a distance of 75.46m. Dilshod Nazarov of Tajikistan won gold medal with a throw of 78.68m. Belarus’ Ivan Tsikhan (77.79m) and Poland’s Wojciech Nowicki (77.73m) took silver and bronze medals.
Qatar got their lone medal when star high jumper Mutaz Barshim earned silver medal. The contingent’s handball team also displayed a good show before losing to Germany in the quarter-finals. The beach volleyball also reached the knock-out stage.
