DOHA: The number of deaths of Nepalese workers in Qatar reached its highest in July with 32 deaths, a diplomat said.

A majority of them died due to cardiovascular disorders and at an average age of 25 years, Second Secretary of the mission, Harihar Kant Poudel, told this newspaper on Monday.

He explained that low income workers come here for jobs at an age of around 21 years and they get cardiovascular disorders within a few years.

According to records at the embassy, 13 workers have died due to different cardiovascular disorders and another 11 due to road accidents in July. Some have died after injuries by falling from heights.

In August until Monday, eight Nepalese workers have died, and six of these deaths were due to cardiovascular disorders. The body of one such worker had been flown to the Nepalese capital of Katmandu on Monday, the diplomat revealed.

“The average age of workers who die due to cardiovascular arrest is 25 to 26 years,” said Poudel.

A majority of Nepalese workers in Qatar are below the age of 35, according to Poudel.

“Some die even two or three years after coming here,” said Poudel.

However, Qatar remains one of the most favourite destinations for Nepalese job seekers who are mostly unskilled workers and around 400,000 Nepalese are employed here.

Between July 16 last year and July 15 this year about 90,000 Nepalese arrived in Qatar according to the embassy. The Peninsula
