Doha, Qatar: A nutrition specialist has stressed that dietary plans should be tailored to individual health conditions, medications, and physicians’ recommendations, noting that people with chronic illnesses often have nutritional requirements that differ from those of the general population.
Speaking to Al Rayyan TV, nutrition specialist Kholoud Bahr warned against the widespread practice of following generalised diet plans, emphasizing that nutrition should take into account a person’s overall health status and medical needs. She noted that individuals living with conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, blood disorders, and hereditary illnesses may require specific dietary adjustments as part of their healthcare management.
Bahr explained that while healthy eating principles apply broadly, dietary plans often need to be adapted to suit individual circumstances. She compared nutrition planning to medical treatment, noting that just as different health conditions require different medications, nutritional approaches should also reflect each person’s unique health needs.
To illustrate the importance of personalised nutrition, Bahr shared the example of identical twins who followed the same diet plan but experienced different outcomes.
While one responded well, the other developed symptoms of acid reflux, highlighting how underlying health conditions can influence an individual’s response to certain foods.
She also cautioned against relying solely on supplements, vitamins, or alternative approaches in place of prescribed medical treatment. While such products may support overall health, Bahr stressed that individuals with chronic diseases should continue following their physicians’ treatment plans and seek professional medical advice before making significant dietary changes.
Bahr underscored the importance of consulting qualified healthcare professionals rather than relying on generalized recommendations or unverified advice. She called for greater public awareness of personalized nutrition, encouraging people to choose dietary approaches that support their individual health needs and medical circumstances.
