DOHA: Katara in cooperation with the Azerbaijan Embassy staged a musical concert called “Azerbaijan Mugam Night” on Thursday at the Katara Drama Theatre.
A number of ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions were among those in attendance who came to discover and enjoy traditional musical compositions by the Azeri people featuring Mugam, a well-known type of Azerbaijani folk music.
A highly complex art form that combines classical poetry and musical improvisation, mugam was declared a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2003.
The band enthralled the audience playing melodic songs with the accompaniment of native Azerbaijani musical instruments.
An exhibition of Azerbaijani art and handicraft was organised along with the event.
It showcased carpet weaving, textile printing and silk scarves, along with paintings of some of the most famous Azerbaijani artists.
