Doha: Bilateral trade between Qatar and Malaysia rose by 38 percent to QR2.4bn last year from QR1.8bn in 2020, Chairman of Qatar Chamber (QC) Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim Al Thani has said during a meeting with the Malaysian Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities H E Zuraida Kamaruddin at the Chamber’s headquarters yesterday.
During the event, wherein both leaders reviewed boosting cooperation ties, Sheikh Khalifa reiterated that Malaysia is one of Qatar’s important trade partners.
The meeting also discussed ways to enhance and develop collaboration and trade relations between the Qatari and Malaysian private sectors in the commercial and economic fields.
They also reviewed the investment climate and opportunities available in both countries in agriculture and food security fields and the possibility to forge partnerships between companies and businessmen from both sides.
Speaking during the meeting, Sheikh Khalifa praised the close relations between both countries, and affirmed that over the recent years they witnessed significant development in all sectors and fields.
The two countries’ trade exchange hit QR 2.4bn in 2021 compared QR1.8bn in 2020, showing an increase of 38 percent despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Sheikh Khalifa went on to emphasise the Chamber’s support for the Qatar-Malaysia Business Council which was established in 2017, and assured its keenness to perform its role in enhancing cooperation between both countries’ business sectors.
He added that there are many Malaysian companies that are operating in Qatar in various sectors, while there are many Qatari investments in Malaysia in sectors like tourism, banking, real estate, and industry.
For her part, the Malaysian Minister praised the boom Qatar is witnessing in all fields, and reviewed the sectors in which both sides can cooperate such as construction, infrastructure, agriculture, halal, and SMEs.
Kamaruddin also invited Qatari investors and businessmen to invest in her country which offers plenty of opportunities in various sectors, stressing the importance of strengthening commercial and investment cooperation between both countries.
She also invited QC members to participate in the upcoming Malaysian International Agricommodity Expo and Summit (MIACES 2022) scheduled to be held from July 26-28, 2022 in Kuala Lumpur. The summit aims to combat the prejudice against Malaysia’s main commodity, palm oil, while increasing the production of key commodities such as rubber, palm oil and timber, as well as the national kenaf sector and cocoa industry, she added.
