Doha: Qatar University’s (QU) College of Health Sciences and College of Engineering recently hosted a virtual seminar titled “Humanitarian Engineering and Health Innovations: Experience from AUB.”
Presentations were delivered by Aline Germani, Director at the Center for Public Health Practice, the Health Sciences Faculty at the American University of Beirut, and Dr. Imad Elhajj, Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at the American University of Beirut. The event started with an opening remark by Dr. Khalid Naji, Dean of the College of Engineering, followed by Dr. Hanan Abdulrahim, Dean of the College of Health Sciences.
This seminar is the start of a promising collaboration between the College of Health Sciences and College of Engineering at QU and the Humanitarian Engineering Initiative (HEI) at AUB. The seminar introduced the HE concept, which generated interest among QU faculty and students. The CHS aims with CENG at QU to implement a similar initiative, which could impact Qatar’s increasingly prominent role in the humanitarian front in collaboration with key players in humanitarian aid, including Qatar Red Crescent Society and Qatar Fund For Development.
Both colleges are also planning for a workshop during the next fall semester to generate research topics and public health priorities for refugees and design innovative solutions for humanitarian and health challenges.
Dr. Hanan Abdul Rahim commented on the event, “We find that the Humanitarian Initiative would be very impactful for the increasingly prominent role that Qatar is playing on the humanitarian front. We are proud to work with Qatar University’s College of Engineering to explore the possibilities of implementing a similar initiative. As long-standing valued partners and key players in humanitarian aid, Qatar Fund for Development and Qatar Red Crescent Society would also be natural collaborators for us.”
