Santiago: Former Chilean president Patricio Aylwin was hospitalized in Santiago after suffering a cranial injury in a fall at home, according to medical authorities.
Aylwin, who is 97, is in stable condition with a contusion to the brain, according to a statement late Friday from the German Hospital of Santiago. It said he was under observation in the intensive care ward.
The former leader was described as alert; the clinic said he would remain there at least through Saturday.
Aylwin, a Christian Democrat, was president from 1990 to 1994, the first civilian to lead the country after the 17-year dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet.
He led a complex transition to democracy, including dealing with Pinochet's continued role as commander of the armed forces, a position the general retained until 1998.
