DOHA: World renowned academic Professor Robert S Kaplan urged businesses to “do well by doing good” as he addressed the sixth Strategic Leadership Forum in Qatar yesterday at Katara. Kaplan stressed the need for businesses to go beyond Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Create Shared Value (CSV) in response to the many challenges the world is facing today.
“The mutual influences between business and society have increased significantly, so what was known recently as CSR became not enough, since CSR was a reaction to social pressure rather than creating real shared value. Although CSR was useful and contributed to some positive changes, the real need now is to Create Shared Value (CSV) bringing lasting impact to the society,” said Kaplan.
He cited success stories of companies which have attempted to create shared value. While CSR is part of side activities which are carried out by the company for the benefit of the society, CSV is based on the principle of shared value which benefits both the company and the society.
The event saw the presence of representatives of private and government entities in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, US, and Italy. “Today, we are honoured to welcome Prof Kaplan, who is co-founder of Palladium Group, and one of the 25 economic thinkers in the world, and co-innovator of the Balanced Scorecard which has been classified by Harvard Business School as the most important thought in management during the past 75 years,” said Katara General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al Sulaiti.
