Qatar’s Ibrahim misses out on Asian Games wrestling bronze medal

Doha: Qatar’s Abdullrahman Ibrahim went down fighting to Korea’s Byungmin Gong  in the bronze medal bout in the Men’s Freestyle 74 kg wrestling event at the Asian Games yesterday.

Abdulrahman missed out on a bronze medal as he lost to Gong 10-0 on day one of the competitions.

Tala Abu Jubara provided some cheer when she qualified for Repechages in the women’s single sculls  of rowing held yesterday in Palembang.

Tala’s bagged the sixth rank  in heats and qualified for the Repechages.

“The race today was okay, there was a very strong wind and the conditions were very challenging. I had some technical issues; the start was not so strong. So, this was not my best race I hope I can perform better in the next race on Tuesday,” she said after the race.

“There are some very strong competitors, for example china and Korea, but I think if I do my best I can get good results. In general, I am very happy to be here in Indonesia at the Asian Games to represent my country it’s an honour. Also, to be the first Qatari woman to participate in rowing is also an honour.”

In fencing, Mohammed Alshemari Men’s qualified for the round of 32  in the Epee Individual Preliminaries rounds but lost to Vietnam’s Nguyen Tien 15-7 and did not qualify for the round of 16.

In Taekwondo, Qatar’s Huda Akbar lost to Malaysia’s Khim Wen Yap inthe Women Individual Poomsae Round of 16 and did not qualify for the quarterfinals.

The Qatar squad had an off day in office losing 2-0 in beach volleyball at Palembang, South Sumatra. The Qatar pair of Ahmed and Cherif  who are in Group B lost to Kazakhstani pair of Bogatu and Yakovlev.

In tennis,  both the Qatari players, Zayid Mubarak and Jaber Al Mutawa lost their respective singles matches to players from Thailand and Hong Kong.

Mubarak lost to Thailand’s Palaphoom Kovapitukted 2-0 and did not qualify for the round of 32 Jabir lost to Hong Kong’s Wong Hong 2-0 and did not qualify.

The tennis doubles team also suffered the same fate going down to Philippines.

Today, Qatar which have qualified for the second phase of the handball event and who are defending the title they won four years back will take on Iraq.

In volleyball, Qatar which won the AVC Cup defeating Iran in the final recently, will begin their campaign with a match against Maldives today.

More than 200 Qatari athletes, including 29 sportswomen will be seen in action during the 16-day multi-sport extravaganza which is only second to Olympics in terms of the number of participants.

The Qatari athletes will compete in more than 20 sports and 30 disciplines and will target a rich haul at the Asiad to better the 14-medal mark they achieved in Incheon four years ago.

This is the biggest-ever Qatari contingent at the Asiad. Team Qatar will rely on athletics, shooting, beach volleyball, weightlifting, handball and equestrian events to deliver medals. Al Annabi have won a total of 107 medals in 10 appearances, including 37 gold medals.
