DOHA: Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has urged customers to replace Tungsten lamps with LED bulbs, saying it can save electricity up to 80 percent.
“By using LED bulbs, you will get better energy efficiency from 10- to 18-folds than incandescent ones. Thus, you will consume less electricity by up to 80 percent which will contribute to saving the state’s energy as a whole where the lighting consumes 10-15 percent of the total energy consumption in a building,” Kahramaa said in a statement yesterday.
LED bulbs also produce less heat with no harmful carbon emissions compared to regular bulbs (Tungsten).
Thus, LED bulb is environment-friendly, more comfortable for eyes and better for family’s health.
Kahramaa, through the National Programme for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed) and in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment and other entities concerned, issued a regulation banning the import of Tungsten bulbs 75 and 100 watts in 2015.
The actual application of the ban started this May after giving a chance to the suppliers to rectify their situation.
Customers could also reduce energy consumption through other simple steps such as availing of sunlight during the day as much as possible, especially those who have walls painted with light colours which let them avail of the largest amount of natural light, the statement said.
Turning off all lights after leaving the room and unused rooms will also reduce electricity consumption.
The proper design of lights in the rooms and buildings by specialists to ensure energy efficient usage is also important.
The frugal lighting in modern buildings is 8 watts per square metre, said the statement.
Tarsheed law No. 20 of 2015 stipulated that keeping the building’s external lightings on between 7am and 4.30pm is against the law and could be punished with a fine of QR10,000.
It also stressed the importance of installing lighting timers in all buildings to control external lighting according to the adopted conditions of Kahramaa.
Through Tarsheed, Kahramaa has developed standards, specifications and continuous upgrades for lighting and plumbing devices and equipment. It also studies and makes surveys periodically to develop requirements and technical standards for devices, tools and equipment to keep in pace with modern techniques used in the field. The Peninsula
