DOHA: Qataris have urged authorities to set standards and specifications for shops at commercial complexes.
They said some shops in commercial centres are being partitioned into smaller spaces to lease out to businesses such as restaurants and barber shops whose spaces are too small for customers and employees.
The tiny establishments are cramped and not comfortable for customers. They don’t have waiting areas or a place to sit, so customers tend to stay in their cars waiting for their turn.
This is happening not only in commercial centres but also in souqs, they alleged.
One citizen wondered how authorities can grant licences to small establishments such as cafeterias and barber shops which require waiting areas.
Shop areas must be suited to the kind of business and service it provides and the number of workers it employs. It should also have a place for customers to sit and enough space to move, they suggested.
Some citizens also voiced concern about security and safety in these shops.
