DOHA: The Supreme Education Council (SEC) has asked Independent schools to allow parents to buy school uniforms for their children from shops of their choice.

The directive has come in a circular issued by SEC’s Education Institute to Independent schools for girls related to specifications of uniforms for the academic year 2013-2014.

Uniforms for girls must be designed according to “modest Islamic dress standards” (long and loose garments, long sleeves, not transparent). The dress must be comfortable, not tight, said the circular.

The school must provide parents with the uniform design to allow them get it stitched from wherever they want to.  Parents are also free to buy the clothes from shops of their choice. The school should not have any financial interest in the project.

All schools must choose plain colours for the uniforms that are available at a reasonable price in the local market. They have been given a range of colours to choose from. Primary schools can choose light blue, grey or pink for the skirt, preparatory schools can select from maroon, brown and grey while secondary schools are given the options of grey, dark blue and black.

Schools in all three levels can choose white, beige or pink for the shirt.

Sports uniform for all Independent schools (boys/girls) in all levels must be black, white, dark blue or maroon (trousers) and white, dark blue or maroon (shirt)

The SEC has asked all schools to provide the SEC logo (to be fixed on the uniform) for a price not exceeding QR5 and properly convey this information to all the parents.

Schools must provide the uniform design with a sample of the colour while registering new students and to students of KG and Grade 1. The SEC has also directed all the schools to display a copy of the SEC announcement at the main gate of their premises in a prominent way.

The circular comes in line with the policy described in the executive regulations of Decision No. 1 of 2008  regarding school uniforms. The Peninsula
