DOHA: The Ministry of Environment has received 2,322 applications online from citizens seeking space for setting up winter camps this season. Deadline for registration expired on Thursday.
So far, 1,722 applications have been approved. Text messages confirming approval have been sent to the applicants and remaining requests are being looked into. Confirmation messages to all applicants will be sent within a few days, the ministry said in a statement.
It has asked applicants who have received messages to visit the department concerned to complete procedures before the beginning of the season. They should produce a certified bank account (IBAN) and ID cards.
Campers have been asked not to set up tents before the season begins. The season starts from November 1 and lasts until March 31.
Last year, 2,250 camps were set up. Violations recorded last season were 20 and about 70 percent were related to damaging land surface.
Patrolling teams will visit all camps to ensure whether campers are complying with rules. Tents set up before the season will be removed and legal action taken against violators, said the ministry.
Camping rules stipulate that the applicant should be a Qatari, aged 25 years and above. Only one licence would be issued for one person. Campers should pay security money and comply fully with environment law.
Greenery should not be destroyed inside the camping area that is 50sqm. Tents should be set up within 30 days from the issuance of licence. And camps should not be abandoned or fixed on ground. Portacabins on wheels are allowed.
Machines are not allowed to dig the land in camping areas. Some minor manual digging is allowed but potholes should be mended after the season.
Blocks are allowed to fix tents but concreting with any type of cement is not allowed. Fencing camping space is also not allowed. It is allowed to cover the camping area from three sides and one should be opened. Campers are allowed to take some animals (10 sheep/goats and five camels as maximum).
