Niamey--Police in Niger fired teargas Sunday to disperse a banned opposition demonstration in the capital Niamey, a day after deadly riots erupted over publication by France's Charlie Hebdo magazine of a cartoon depicting Islam's Prophet Mohammed.

Around 300 demonstrators gathered for a march on parliament, but were scattered into surrounding streets and were attempting to regroup, an AFP correspondent reported.

Seven protestors, including a former minister, were arrested, a police source said.
