Doha: Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), attended World Green Building Congress in Hong Kong.
Held last month under the theme ‘Thinking Beyond: Pathway to Future Sustainable City Development’, the annual event provided over 400 leaders from green building councils from around the world opportunity to discuss latest developments in the field of sustainability research and policy.
The QGBC team highlighted initiatives and efforts undertaken by the Government of Qatar and private sector companies to promote sustainability and green buildings in the country.
QGBC’s participation supports QF’s mission to foster a progressive society and seeks to support Qatar National Vision 2030 in creating a vibrant sustainability culture with a focus on Qatar’s booming construction industry.
An informative presentation delivered by Engineer Meshal Al Shamari, Director, QGBC, provided participants with an overview of sustainability efforts the government of Qatar has pursued over the last decade.
He said: “During the last decade, the government of Qatar has increased efforts to protect the environment and foster a culture of sustainability. Continuing to play a significant role in the green sector, the government has established campaigns to raise awareness about energy and water consumption. Similar efforts have been extended towards the construction and waste management sectors.”
In recent years, in collaboration with industry partners, QGBC has established initiatives and programmes to foster sustainability research and awareness in Qatar and the region.
These include Qatar’s first Passivhausvilla, the introduction of a prestigious sustainability education programme; eight industry interest groups; Qatar’s first green directory; and awareness efforts, including the annual No Paper Day and green summer campaigns.
