DOHA: More than two million people fighting for survival in Aleppo, the besieged city of Syria, have benefited from the urgent humanitarian aid worth more than QR17m provided by Qatar Charity during the past six months.
The aid includes basic food items, clean water, medicines, cleaning materials, shelters and other supplies. The QC provided around QR3.5m for mobilising ambulances, medicines and other supplies, for restoring hospitals.
Baby milk was distributed to around 8,500 children. Families were also given food baskets and ready meals, and flour. In addition, the beneficiaries received food baskets such as those given during last Ramadan, and the bakeries were operated. For example, a mobile bakery was opened in Jarabulus and more than 300,000 people benefited. Kilis Kitchen was supported and offered services to around 50,000 people.
QC’s projects in the field of water and sanitation included the distribution of water tanks and cleaning baskets at a cost of QR2.3m. As for shelter, Qatar Charity distributed blankets, mattresses, bedsheets, rainproof items, clothes, cooking tools and other in-kind house supplies at a total cost of around QR2.6m.
“The money for this was donated by philanthropists in Qatar to alleviate the sufferings of the people of Aleppo. There is a severe shortage of basic food, baby milk and other supplies in the war-ravaged areas,” said Rashid Al Ka’bi, Director of Relief Management at QC.
“It is our wish to provide the people of Aleppo with food supplies to meet the shortage caused by the unrest and the siege of the city. People are suffering due to price rise. We want to alleviate their financial and psychological burdens. We would also like to prevent the spread of diseases resulting from malnutrition”, he added.
