Doha: The Ministry of Interior represented by its Logistics Department yesterday signed an agreement with Turkey’s Ares Shipyard Ltd. to build and deliver 17 fast patrol boats worth about QR800m to enhance capabilities of the Coasts and Borders Security Department.
Brigadier Engineer Abdulaziz Abdullah Al Ansari, Director of the Logistics Department, Kerim Kalafatoglu, Chairman and Executive Director, Ares Shipyard Ltd. signed the deal.
The signing ceremony was attended by Turkish Ambassador Ahmet Demirok, Brigadier Ali Ahmed Al Badeed, Director, Coasts and Borders Security Department, and Brigadier Ahmed Al Jammal, Director, Financial Affairs Department at the ministry.
Brigadier Al Ansari said the contract, the biggest in shipbuilding industry in Turkey, followed two years of study. Information and data were collected about companies in the field worldwide and final results were in favour of the Turkish partner, he said.
Talks with Ares lasted almost a year until an agreement was concluded concerning all items and specifications in the contract which matched the highest possible standards. Last month, Turkey signed an MoU to deliver 17 fast patrol boats for Qatar Coast Guard Services, at the fourth Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (Dimdex 2014).
