Abuja: At least 11 militants were killed in two separate military operations in northeastern Nigeria.

The Nigerian army said in a statement Tuesday that its forces killed at least 11 militants affiliated with ISIS group, as part of efforts to dismantle insurgent networks in the region.

The statement noted that the clashes took place yesterday, Monday, in the states of Borno and Adamawa, northeast of the country.

Northeastern Nigeria states are frequently attacked by armed groups, which began an insurgency in northeastern Nigeria in 2009.

The insurgency has killed approximately 40,000 people and forced approximately two million Nigerians to flee their homes.

The violence has also spread to neighboring Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, prompting the formation of a regional force to combat these groups.
