Doha College recognised 160 students for their academic excellence at its annual Awards Ceremony at the Radisson Blu Hotel on Saturday.
Doha College Principal Mark Leppard said the Awards brought together secondary students, parents, staff and members of the College’s Board of Governors to celebrate the end of the academic year.
“This annual Award Ceremony is designed to acknowledge and reward our highest achieving students for their academic successes and their charitable achievements throughout the year,” Mr Leppard said.
“The student winners are recommended by teachers and compete against all other students within their subject and year groups so the winners really are the best in class,” he said.
There are five different award categories:
• Outstanding Student Award
• Walton Community Award
• Subject Awards (there are 17 categories, one for each subject)
• Form Tutor Awards
• Model United Nation Colours.
The top prizes—Outstanding Student and Walton Community awards—were announced on the night.
The 2015 Outstanding Student Award was presented to Ayah Mekhaimar, Year 13, for excellence in a range of subjects.
Leppard said Ayah achieved full marks in six of her examination papers and achieved the highest mark in Biology for the Cambridge Examination Board in Qatar.
“Her average score across her examinations was over 95 percent and she has been accepted to Kings College to pursue her ambitions in medicine,” he said.
“Ayah truly is an outstanding student, a great role model for everyone to follow and she should be very proud of everything she has achieved.”
Rebecca Jacob, Year 11, received the Walton Community Award for her commitment to the community.
Rebecca was nominated for her work as a volunteer at the Run the World Festival in Doha in December last year. She was named one of the most active volunteers by her department manager and has taken part in numerous cultural activities, such as the Youth’s Got Talent competition and the Al Jazeera Kids Channel’s Siwar Choir.
Students from Years 7 to 13 were presented Subject Awards for academic success in their specific subjects.
Thirty Form Tutor Awards were presented (18 to Key Stage 3 and 12 to Key Stage 4) for their commitment to extra-curricular activities, leadership qualities and exemplary behaviour that brought credit to their Tutor Group, Doha College and the wider community.
Leppard said the ceremony was also an opportunity to acknowledge students who take part in the College’s successful Model United Nations (DCMUN).
“Principal Colours and Full Colours were awarded to students who have given exceptional service to DCMUN,” eppard said.
“These 10 students are considered as role models for the DCMUN programme,” Leppard said.
“They would have attended numerous conferences and would have chaired committees or guided teams of students - all excellent skills for their future careers,” he said. The Peninsula
